Opera 10.50 for Windows is released

2 March, 2010 - 10:02
Windows 10.50 is released and we are still the fastest browser available! If you haven't downloaded it yet, what is taking you so long? Head over to www.opera.com/download, to get your hands on it now.

We have gone from Pre-Alpha to Final in just over two months (with a Christmas holiday in between I might add). Never has the development of the desktop browser been so fast. Our developers are rivalling Carakan for speed! But the thanks doesn't just go to them, we simply couldn't have done it without your testing and feedback. So give yourselves a big pat on the back for all that we have achieved together. :D

In the last couple of blog posts, several of you commented that our developers deserve some time off and whilst that is true, I know the Mac and UNIX teams are still hungry to get their own versions of 10.50 out. So there will be no slacking off, just yet. Development continues apace!

Whilst you Mac and UNIX users await your respective finals, we thought we'd give you another snapshot. Like the Windows final, these builds have the latest rendering improvements but are understandably still rougher around the edges, as they have not yet been fully optimised and integrated into their environments (though Mac is getting close).

Highlights
  • The latest Presto and Carakan improvements

Known Issues
  • Mac
    • No support for PowerPC (PPC)
    • Minimal Java Support
    • Possible performance issues on low end machines

  • UNIX
    • Font problems
    • Language input issues
    • Compiz issues
    • No .deb or .rpm packages
    • Some Command line option don't work

WARNING: Opera 10.50 for Mac and Unix is a development snapshot: it contains the latest changes, but may also have severe known issues, including crashes and data loss situations. In fact, it may not work at all.

RC5, or was it 7?

1 March, 2010 - 19:53
We're starting to lose count of the number of release candidates we have had. Well, with the amount of snapshots we have had lately and the helpful testing aid we have gotten from you guys and girls we have been able to kill many severe bugs.
We have killed a few more today, so please enjoy the new release candidate.

Opera 10.50 RC for Windows

28 February, 2010 - 09:14
You might have noticed that the 10.50 snapshots contain a lot more changes and fixes than usual. This is the result of our increased focus and has sped up the development process significantly.
Thanks to the hard work of the Opera engineers Opera 10.50 for Windows has now reached RC status.
We hope you like the new speed of development because we plan to work as hard to finalize 10.50 for Unix and Mac. :D

Video seeking
This build build mainly includes stabilization fixes, but also a new feature in (html5) video: It's now possible to seek through videos that are not completely downloaded yet. If you skip forward in a video, Opera will adjust the download process so you don't have to download the part that you are not going see.

A small changelog

27 February, 2010 - 16:56
It's a snowy day here in Oslo, Norway, so what better way to spend the afternoon than with a new snapshot?

As you can see from the changelog, this build has a couple of fixes, and further fixes are expected in upcoming snapshots. At this stage, we are particularly interested in any recent regressions you may find.

We would also like to know if you are experiencing any new problems with the cache in the last few builds. There's a forum thread about new cache issues. It should be noted that some of the issues discussed in that thread are probably fixed in this build (CORE-28155: Opera downloads already cached items, ignoring cache settings). Let us know if you find anything.

Please note that there are no Mac or Unix builds, and HTML5 <video> is not working.

Highlights
  • MDI work
  • Stability work
  • Bookmarks fixes
  • Opera Link fixes
  • Private Browsing improvements
  • Mail fixes
  • <video> seeking work (although <video> is not working in this build)

Known Issues
  • HTML5 <video> is not working
  • Using Inspect Element can crash Opera
  • Crash when setting Web page image as Speed Dial background via context menu

New build for you guys

23 February, 2010 - 10:52
Here is a new build with some nice Core updates.
Our core department has been working on improving Opera's cache, and this is the first build with these updates.

This build should also be more stable on Windows after running a long time due the fixing of a GDI leak which could cause crashes and freezing tendencies.

A new Mac build will be uploaded a little later today :)

Fix for Windows 7 crash and <video>

21 February, 2010 - 11:15
Here's another Windows build.

HTML5 <video> should be working again, and we reverted the fix that caused the crashes in Windows 7. The changelog is basically:

  • Fixed: DSK-282162 <video> element no longer working
  • Reverted fix: DSK-278062 File icons in the download dialog are stretched

You can now watch the video from Friday's Mac build on Windows too.

Thanks to those of you who gave us feedback on upgrading for the previous build! Do let us know if anyone finds any further problems when upgrading.

Keep reporting crashes as well!

Bringing <video> to the Mac (and a free movie!)

19 February, 2010 - 14:46
We now bring you the latest and greatest from the Mac Team! The team has fixed bugs, improved Cocoa integration, introduced an annoying beeping sound whenever you press keyboard shortcuts (known issue!), and last but certainly most exciting: brought <video> to the Mac!

To ensure that we actually get some testing of this, we have included a fun filled 10 minute movie. Enjoy! (It is not cats on skateboards but we are doing the best we can.)

  • Beeping sound for many keyboard shortcuts
  • Java applets may show up in unexpected places

Post-beta fixes

19 February, 2010 - 09:57
We promised you more things test after the beta, and here is the first part of the fixes that didn't make it into the beta. In addition to Windows, we also have new Unix builds for testing. We are trying to get something for Mac later on.

These builds contain a number of Unix specific fixes and improvements, as well as some of the many general bugs we have been working on since before the beta. This includes some work on the e-mail client.

If anyone is feeling adventurous and wants to test upgrading from Opera 10.10 or earlier, let us know about any problems you come across. We recommend against upgrading your stable installation of Opera, but it is of course possible to take a backup copy which can be restored after you have performed the test upgrade.

Important: We have switched back to the old bookmarks format. If you have upgraded from an older 10.50 build and your bookmarks are missing, you may have to copy over your bookmarks manually.

Known Issues

General
  • The bookmarks might be ignored if you upgrade from older 10.50 builds
  • Hovered/selected items in dropdown menus go white

Windows
  • HTML5 video is not working correctly
  • Scrolling on pages with plugins leaks GDI handles

Unix
  • Font problems
  • Command line option problems
  • Compiz issues
  • Language input issues
  • ...and more

Highlights

General
  • Several mail improvements, such as a better startup sequence, new features for the reply button, and bug fixes
  • Bookmarks work
  • Some performance work

Windows
  • Ghostbusting

Unix
  • Added drag&drop
  • Remote commands work

WARNING: This is a development snapshot: it contains the latest changes, but may also have severe known issues, including crashes and data loss situations. In fact, it may not work at all.

Crash fixing, performance work, and widgets in a panel

18 February, 2010 - 15:21
We are focusing a lot on stability at the moment, and have fixed some of the most frequent crash bugs. Keep those crash logs coming, though!

Our core team has also tweaked class selector matching (CSS) performance a bit (a quick test showed performance gains of up to 20-30% for the specific testcase I used).

This build has a new panel for widgets which allows you to launch and uninstall widgets from within the browser. Widgets will still use the Windows installation system, but it will be much easier to keep track of which widgets you have installed.

To get an idea about why widgets are important, look at how a lot of big companies are looking to standardize on widgets for cross-platform applications.

There will not be a detailed changelog this time around since we are mostly focusing on crashes and the new widgets panel.

Finally, you will have to wait a bit more for Mac and Unix builds due to the work that is being done on those platforms.

Known issues
  • The Advanced section of the Preferences dialog is corrupted

WARNING: This is a development snapshot: it contains the latest changes, but may also have severe known issues, including crashes and data loss situations. In fact, it may not work at all.

No rest for the wicked

17 February, 2010 - 13:30
Even with the beta out, there still isn't much time to rest. We've got another snapshot, and this time there are quite a few crash fixes, and updates to Carakan and widgets.

The main focus of this snapshot is crash bugs.

We will get back to you with Unix and Mac builds in a future snapshot.
